  • We usually add -ed to regular verbs to form the past tense.
    The spelling sometimes changes a little:
Most verbs +ed walk → walked
started → started
Verbs ending in -e +d use → used
arrive → arrived
Verbs ending in -y -y +ied carry → carried
study → studied
Verbs ending in a vowel + consonant double the consonant +ed stop→ stopped
occur → occurred

  1. The students ____________ (study) very hard for the test yesterday.

  1. I ____________ (not / see) Mr Chan because he ____________(be) standing behind a wall.
To show what happened in the past, we often use words or phrases like yesterday, last night, three weeks ago, this morning, in the past, in the previous day, etc.
